1/72 Messerschmitt 262 A-1a/WGr.21
Arma Hobby 1/72 Messerschmitt Me 262 A-1a/WGr.21 is a die-cast plastic model of an unusual combat variant of the world's first operational jet fighter aircraft. The kit is based on the award-winning Me 262 A-1a base kit and is enhanced with 3D printed WGr.21 missile carriers, etched parts and pre-cut masks. Decals for two versions of the markings are included. The package does not include paints or adhesives.
The Messerschmitt Me 262 was the first operationally deployed jet fighter in history. Although it entered service too late and in too small numbers to make a major impact on the course of the war, it represented a technological breakthrough that heralded an entire era of jet aviation. The basic A-1a "Schwalbe" variant carried an armament of four 30mm MK 108 cannons in the nose and served primarily as a fighter for Allied bombers and heavy bombers. It was in the bomber destroyer role that the Luftwaffe attempted to exploit the Me 262's speed superiority to the fullest - and sought ways to increase the destructive effect of each attack.
The A-1a/WGr.21 variant represents one of the less common attempts to boost the Me 262's firepower by adding WGr.21 (Werfer-Granate 21) missile carriers. These 21cm rockets were originally developed for piston fighters such as the Bf 109 and Fw 190 and were used to break up tightly packed Allied bomber formations by firing from longer ranges. Their deployment on the Me 262 was experimental and operationally very limited - the jet, with its significantly higher speed and different aerodynamics, placed much more stringent demands on the integration of such bulky carriers than piston types. Nevertheless, this variant documents the breadth of attempts by the Luftwaffe in the final phase of the war to increase the effectiveness of its jet fighters in combating mass air raids. The kit is associated with the designation of JG 7 "Nowotny", the first full-scale Luftwaffe jet fighter formation, named in honour of Walter Nowotny.
The 1:72 scale Arma Hobby kit is based on the award-winning Me 262 A-1a base kit and adds 3D printed WGr.21 missile carriers with mounting elements, etched parts for finer detail and pre-cut masks for the cockpit glazing and wheels. Decals for two versions of the markings are included, along with detailed assembly and painting instructions. As an optional extension, Arma Hobby offers a downloadable 3D file for home printing of the detailed cab interior. The 1:72 scale is a classic choice for the Me 262 - the model is large enough to faithfully capture the airframe shapes and landing gear details while remaining space-saving. The package does not include paint or glue.
