1/32 Spitfire Mk.Ia (Late) "Battle of Britain"
The Kotare 1/32 Spitfire Mk.Ia (Late) ‘Battle of Britain’ is a plastic model kit of a British fighter aircraft from the Second World War, designed to be assembled. The kit depicts a late production version of the Spitfire Mk.Ia built just before and during the Battle of Britain, with details typical of these aircraft. The pack contains over 136 high-quality injection-moulded plastic parts, a fully illustrated instruction booklet and high-quality Cartograf decals for three colour schemes of the late Spitfire Mk.Ia from the height of the Battle of Britain. The kit does not include the paints or adhesives required for assembly.
The Supermarine Spitfire is one of the most iconic fighter aeroplanes in history, and its role in the defence of Great Britain during the Battle of Britain made it a true legend. The Mk.Ia version, powered by a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine and armed with eight .303 calibre machine guns, combined speed, manoeuvrability and rate of climb in a way that defined modern fighter combat. In the summer and autumn of 1940, the Spitfire Mk.Ia, alongside the Hurricanes, formed the backbone of the RAF’s Fighter Command and faced Luftwaffe raids in the direct defence of British airspace.
This model focuses on the late-production Mk.Ia aircraft built just before and during the Battle of Britain. It was these aircraft that introduced a number of modifications which distinguished them from earlier production runs — including, amongst other things, a De Havilland constant-speed propeller, armour plating behind the pilot’s seat and headrest, and engine-powered retractable landing gear. For modellers, this kit therefore represents a historically accurate depiction of the Spitfire from precisely the period of its most famous deployment.
The Kotare 1:32 scale kit is a glue-up model comprising more than 136 high-quality injection-moulded plastic parts. These include details corresponding to the late production version, such as the controls for the engine-powered retractable undercarriage, composite pilot’s seats (in versions with and without marked seat belts), the instrument panel and radio compartment access door with raised rivets. Also included are fully illustrated assembly instructions and high-quality decals from the Italian printer Cartograf for three late-production Spitfire Mk.IAs from the height of the Battle of Britain.
The large 1:32 scale stands out for its wealth of detail and allows for impressive rendering of surfaces and colour schemes. For a fighter aircraft from the Battle of Britain, the usual approach is to apply subtle panel line highlighting and operational wear and tear consistent with intensive combat use. The kit does not contain the paints or adhesives required for assembly.
