1/48 Savoia-Marchetti SM.79-II Sparviero

The Savoia-Marchetti SM.79 Sparviero (meaning ‘Sparrowhawk’) was one of the most significant Italian aircraft of the Second World War and became one of the symbols of the Italian Air Force. It was characterised by its tri-engine configuration and a mixed wood-and-metal construction, which was based on the successful transport and record-breaking aircraft of the second half of the 1930s. Originally designed as a fast transport aircraft, the SM.79 soon established itself in a military role, where it proved particularly effective as a medium bomber and, above all, as a torpedo bomber. It was precisely in this role as a torpedo-carrying aircraft that Italian crews earned a reputation as brave and capable pilots whilst attacking Allied ships in the Mediterranean.

The SM.79-II version was an improved variant fitted with more powerful engines and adapted to carry torpedoes, making it one of the most effective Italian weapons against naval targets. The Sparviero saw service on a number of battlefields, from the Mediterranean to North Africa, and was also deployed alongside other Axis air forces. Thanks to its durability and good flight characteristics, it remained in service throughout Italy’s participation in the war, and some aircraft continued to fly even in the post-war period. For modellers, the SM.79 represents an attractive and distinctive subject with a striking silhouette, its characteristic ‘hump’ above the cockpit and a rich history of combat service.

The pack includes multicoloured water-slide decals, allowing you to finish the model in the appropriate historical markings, and a printed black-and-white instruction booklet that guides you through the build step by step. The larger 1:48 scale will be particularly appreciated by modellers who wish to highlight the details of the surface, engine nacelles and cockpit, or to further refine the model. The pack does not contain the paints or adhesives required for assembly.
