1/48 P-47D-20RA Thunderbolt Saipan 1944 Advanced Kit

The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt was one of the most significant American fighter aircraft of the Second World War and was characterised by its massive build, robustness and formidable firepower. Powered by a high-performance Pratt & Whitney R-2800 radial engine, it was one of the heaviest single-engine fighters of its time, yet it was still able to maintain excellent performance at high altitudes. The Thunderbolt became renowned not only as an escort fighter, but above all as an exceptionally resilient fighter-bomber capable of withstanding considerable damage and returning to base. The P-47D was the most widespread variant of the type and saw service on all major theatres of war, including the Pacific. Specific P-47D-20RA aircraft deployed during the Battle of Saipan in 1944 demonstrate the Thunderbolt’s role in the demanding conditions of the Pacific theatre, where it proved its worth both in gaining air superiority and in supporting ground forces.

Four decal variants are available, allowing modellers to choose specific colour schemes and markings corresponding to aircraft from the 1944 Saipan campaign. When painting, it is common to emphasise the panel lines and apply weathering effects appropriate to the demanding conditions of Pacific theatre operations, such as signs of wear, dust and faded paint. The kit does not include the paints or adhesives required for assembly.
