KITTYHAWK DUAL COMBO 1/48 recommended for 11187

The Curtiss P-40 Warhawk was one of the most widely used American fighters at the beginning of World War II.It became one of the main Allied types deployed in North Africa, the Middle East, Europe and the Pacific. The design was based on the previous Curtiss Hawk series, but a major difference was the installation of the liquid-cooled Allison V-1710 inline engine, which enabled speeds of over 480 km/h (480 mph). The Warhawk was valued for its durability, stability in flight, good armament and excellent effectiveness in ground attacks, although in high-altitude combat it lagged behind the most advanced types of its day.

The Kittyhawk Mk.Ia (equivalent to the American version of the P-40E) brought improved armament of six 12.7 mm machine guns and minor modifications to the fuselage and wing. These machines served primarily with British forces in North Africa, where they provided escort to bombers and support to ground forces. The later Kittyhawk Mk.IV (a variant of the P-40N) was lightweight, equipped with a modified Allison engine and a modified design for better performance at lower altitudes. This variant was flown by RAF, RAAF, RNZAF and SAAF units and took part in intense combat, particularly in the Pacific theatre.
