The North American B-25 Mitchell is an American twin-engine medium bomber that entered service in 1941 and became one of the most widely used bombers of World War II. It was named after General William "Billy" Mitchell, a pioneer of American military aviation. The machine became most famous for the so-called Doolittle raid in April 1942, when sixteen B-25Bs launched from the deck of the aircraft carrier USS Hornet to attack Tokyo - the first American strike on Japanese territory.
The B-25J version was the most produced variant, with over 4,300 built. It combined the classic glass nose of the bomber with heavy machine gun armament (up to 18 .50 caliber machine guns in assault modifications), making it a versatile machine usable for both conventional medium-altitude bombing and low-flying attacks on land and sea targets. The B-25J operated primarily in the Pacific and Mediterranean, but also served with a number of other Allied countries including the RAF, Soviet VVS and Dutch units. They remained in service for decades after the war - as trainers, liaison and transport aircraft - and are still one of the most popular warbirds operated at airshows today.
