The Messerschmitt Bf 109 Friedrich (F version) represented a significant development in the history of the most numerous German fighter of World War II. Introduced in the fall of 1940 and deployed from early 1941, the F-2 variant brought aerodynamic improvements including a new curved nose cowling, redesigned radiators, and cleaner wing shapes, which improved flight characteristics and top speed. The 1,175 hp Daimler-Benz DB 601N engine gave the machine excellent mid-altitude performance. Armament consisted of one 15mm MG 151/15 (later replaced by 20mm MG 151/20) propeller-axis gun and two 7.92mm MG 17 synchronized machine guns above the engine. The Bf 109F-2 proved itself on all fronts, from desert fighting in North Africa to the Eastern Front and the defence of the Reich. Pilots appreciated the balance, handling and reliability of this type, which was one of the most successful versions of the entire Bf 109 series.
