1/32 Heinkel He 162 A-1 Salamander

The Heinkel He 162 "Salamander" (sometimes referred to as the "Volksjäger" - the people's fighter) was one of the most unusual jet aircraft deployed by the Luftwaffe in the final phase of World War II. It was created as an attempt to quickly introduce a simple and inexpensive jet fighter that could be produced in large numbers with minimal requirements for strategic materials and skilled labour. The design was deliberately simplified - a wooden fuselage combined with metal parts, a BMW 003 engine mounted on the back of the fuselage and compact dimensions. The He 162 was extremely fast and agile, but at the same time demanding to pilot and technically immature. It entered limited combat service shortly before the end of the war, when the Luftwaffe no longer had enough fuel, pilots or time to fully exploit the type.

For modellers, the He 162 represents an interesting combination of advanced technology (jet propulsion) and improvised wartime design. The compact shape and unusual engine layout give the model a distinctive appearance that differs significantly from conventional piston fighters and other jet types of the time. The 1:32 scale allows for detailed surface features, panel lines, cockpit and specific details such as the engine on the back or simple landing gear.
