1/48 Supermarine Spitfire PR.XIX
Airfix 1/48 Supermarine Spitfire PR.XIX is a plastic kit of a photo reconnaissance version of the famous British fighter aircraft. The PR.XIX variant was created by combining the late Mk.XIV wings and an unarmed fuselage modified for the installation of cameras, with propulsion provided by a powerful Rolls-Royce Griffon engine. This made the aircraft extremely fast, capable of flying at high altitudes and conducting reconnaissance missions deep over enemy territory. The 1/48 scale model captures the sleek silhouette of the late Spitfire with its long nose, contra-rotating propeller and typical reconnaissance fuselage features.
The Supermarine Spitfire PR.XIX was one of the last and most technically advanced versions of the iconic British aircraft. It was a pure reconnaissance type without armament, combining an aerodynamically clean fuselage with a reinforced structure, a large fuel supply and the installation of specialized cameras in the rear fuselage and under the wings. A key feature was the installation of a Rolls-Royce Griffon 65 or 66 engine with over 2,000 hp, complemented by a five-bladed counter-rotating propeller, which gave the aircraft exceptionally high speed and excellent climb performance.
The PR.XIX entered service in 1944 and operated primarily with RAF units conducting strategic reconnaissance over occupied Europe and later in Southeast Asia. With a speed of over 720 km/h and a range of over 13,000 metres, it was one of the most successful reconnaissance aircraft of its time. Even after the war, these Spitfires were still in service for several years monitoring the borders and documenting post-war changes.
