1/35 US Heavy Wrecker Ward Lafrance Model 1000 - Series 1

The Ward LaFrance Company of Pennsylvania began producing heavy recovery vehicles during World War II, which became an indispensable part of the U.S. Army's logistical support. Introduced into production in 1941, the Model 1000 was equipped with a rugged chassis, a powerful winch and a crane to handle damaged tanks, artillery and trucks. The vehicle was capable of operating in difficult terrain and its reliability quickly made it widely available on all fronts where American troops were operating.

The Series 1 version represents an early design that bore the typical characteristics of the first units produced. This variant was deployed in North Africa, Italy, and Northwest Europe after the Normandy landings. The Ward LaFrance became a symbol of the durability and effectiveness of American technology, as it was able to keep mechanized troops moving even in the most difficult conditions. Vehicles of this series continued to serve after the war, being used by both Allied armies and civilian forces.
