New model paint conversion chart: equivalents across brands in one click

ASK Academy

We have launched a free online paint conversion chart. Enter a paint name or code and instantly see the closest equivalents from other manufacturers – across Gunze, Tamiya, Vallejo, AK Interactive, Citadel, Army Painter and more. And yes, it works for Warhammer too.

You know the situation. The kit instructions call for a paint from one manufacturer, but the paints on your bench are from a completely different brand. Then the hunt begins: dozens of conversion tables, visual comparisons, forum discussions. An hour is gone and you still are not sure whether the shade is close enough.

That is exactly what our model paint conversion chart is built to solve. It helps you find a suitable match in seconds, no matter which brand you start from.

What the converter can do

Enter a paint name or code, even just C3 or Khorne Red, and the converter shows the closest equivalent across the other brands – clearly, with a colour swatch and without unnecessary clutter. For each paint you can also see:

  • paint type – acrylic, lacquer, enamel, spray or metallic,
  • recommended thinner – so you know what to thin it with,
  • FS / RAL / BS codes where the manufacturer provides them – useful for more precise shade matching.

The database currently contains more than 2,200 paints from 11 brands: Gunze (Mr. Color, Mr. Hobby), Tamiya, Vallejo, AK Interactive, Revell, Humbrol, Italeri, Ammo Atom, Mr. Paint, and of course Citadel and Army Painter.

Also useful for Warhammer painters

This is not only for plastic scale models. We also have a complete converter between Citadel, Army Painter and Vallejo, so when you find a Warhammer painting recipe using Citadel paints and want to paint with Vallejo or Army Painter instead, the closest equivalent is one click away.

How to use it

  1. Open the model paint conversion chart.
  2. Type the name or code of the paint you want to replace.
  3. Optionally filter by a specific brand at the top.
  4. Select the paint and immediately see equivalents from other manufacturers.

It is free, online and requires no registration. It works on desktop and mobile, right next to your workbench.

A small note at the end

Treat conversions as guidance. Shades naturally differ between brands and paint types (acrylic vs. lacquer vs. enamel), and every monitor displays colours a little differently. Before a larger purchase, we recommend checking the paint in person whenever possible. We are also expanding the database continuously, so if a colour or brand is missing, let us know.

Try the model paint conversion chart and save yourself hours of searching. Enjoy your modelling!
