The Panzerkampfwagen VI Ausf. Tiger I is undoubtedly one of the most famous tanks of World War II. It was developed to provide the Wehrmacht’s armored divisions with a heavily armored and heavily armed tank that would complement the more common Panzer III and Panzer IV medium tanks, which were no longer an effective counter to enemy tanks. Its primary armament was the renowned and deadly 88mm KwK 36 L/56 long-barreled anti-tank gun. Mounted in the turret and protected by a heavy 120mm armor plate, it was capable of penetrating the armor of any contemporary enemy vehicle even at long range. It was deployed on all major battlefields and played an active role in German military operations in Normandy and on the Western Front. Although it faced reliability and deployment issues, this heavy tank—when operated by experienced crews—was always greatly feared by Allied forces.
