The Santa Maria was the largest and most famous of the trio of ships with which Christopher Columbus made his historic voyage across the Atlantic Ocean in 1492. She served as the flagship of the entire voyage and played a key role in the discovery of the New World.
The carrack was a sturdy and stable sailing ship designed for long ocean voyages. Although the Santa Maria was wrecked off the coast of Hispaniola during the expedition, her name is forever etched in the history of maritime discovery and has come to symbolise the beginning of a new historical period.
