1/72 DH.98 Mosquito NF Mk.XV ‘High-Altitude Night Fighter’
Special Hobby 1/72 scale model of DH.98 Mosquito NF Mk.XV 'High-Altitude Night Fighter' is a plastic model of a high-altitude night fighter version of the famous British WWII aircraft. The kit features a unique variant of the Mosquito with pressurised cockpit, extended wing, Merlin 76 high-altitude engines and nose radar, developed in response to the threat of German high-altitude bombers. Included are decals for two machines - one in PRU Blue and the other in Deep Blue. This version has never before been available as a plastic model. The package does not include the paint or glue needed for assembly.
The De Havilland DH.98 Mosquito was one of the most successful and versatile aircraft of World War II. The NF Mk.XV night fighter version represents a very specialised and rare variant, which was developed in direct response to a specific threat - the German Junkers Ju 86P and R high-altitude reconnaissance and bombing machines, which began to appear over Great Britain at altitudes in excess of 12,000 metres from 1942. The RAF initially had no effective defence against them; only the modified high-altitude versions of the Spitfire Mk.VII and Mk.IX turned the situation around. Fears that the Luftwaffe would deploy more powerful high-altitude bombers led to the development of a specialized high-altitude night-fighter version of the Mosquito.
The Mosquito NF Mk.XV differed from the standard night fighters in several key ways. It received a pressurised cabin to allow the crew to operate at high altitudes without oxygen masks, an extended wing span of 19 metres for better performance in thin air, Rolls-Royce Merlin 76 or 77 high-altitude engines with four-bladed propellers, and AI Mk.VIII radar mounted in the characteristic 'fat' nose. These modifications made it a machine capable of reaching and intercepting even the highest flying opponents. In total, only a small production run of these machines was produced and they were assigned to No.85 Squadron RAF on a trial basis. In practice, it turned out that the threat of German high-altitude bombers was not as acute as feared, and so the NF Mk.XV remained more of an experimental version with limited deployment.
The Mosquito NF Mk.XV is of particular interest to modellers for several reasons. It is a version that has never before been available as a plastic model, which makes it a real novelty. Visually it is very attractive thanks to the extended wing, the characteristic radar nose and the overall elegant lines typical of the Mosquito. The 1:72 scale Special Hobby kit offers a detailed design with decals for two machines - one in PRU Blue (Photographic Reconnaissance Unit Blue), a light blue camouflage used for reconnaissance and some special versions, and the other in Deep Blue, a dark blue paint typical of night fighters. Both color variants are historically correct and offer modelers the option to choose according to personal preference or available reference materials.
The kit is suitable for more advanced modellers interested in less common variants of famous aircraft and for those who appreciate the historical accuracy and uniqueness of the model. The package does not include the paints or glues needed for assembly.
