The Morane-Saulnier MS.406C-1 was the main French fighter aircraft in the late 1930s and formed the backbone of the French Air Force at the outbreak of World War II. Although technically inferior to its opponents, it became famous for its deployment during the Battle of France and later entered the arsenals of several other countries, including Finland, Switzerland, Turkey and Croatia. In these services, it often underwent upgrades and took part in combat even after the surrender of France.
