1/48 F-14D Super Tomcat - AMK
Build the ultimate 1:48 scale version of the legendary US Navy Grumman F-14D Super Tomcat from the top manufacturer AvantGarde Model Kits (AMK). The F-14D is a state-of-the-art variant equipped with digital avionics, the new AN/APG-71 radar and powerful General Electric F110-GE-400 engines.
This kit is known for its precise shapes, detailed workmanship and intelligent construction. It allows all the key elements of the "Bombcat " era to be recreated, including an expanded range of suspended armament and a modern cockpit. The set includes detailed weapons and decals for the famous US Navy squadrons that flew the Tomcat until its retirement in 2006.
The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is an American airborne, supersonic, twin-engine fighter aircraft with a tandem two-seat configuration and variable wing geometry. It was developed for the United States Navy (USN) following the cancellation of the F-111B project and entered service in 1974, replacing the F-4 Phantom II as the primary fighter to provide air superiority and fleet defense.
The F-14D Super Tomcat variant is the culmination of the evolution of this platform. It was introduced in 1991 (both new-builds and upgraded older F-14As) and represented the most extensive modernization:
-
Engines: the original and problematic Pratt & Whitney TF30 engines were replaced by the much more reliable and powerful General Electric F110-GE-400 engines. These significantly improved the thrust-to-weight ratio and increased the safety of aircraft carrier operations.
-
Avionics and Radar: The original AWG-9 analog radar was replaced by the AN/APG-71 digital radar, which offered greater range, better jamming resistance, and the ability to track and lock onto multiple targets.
-
Cockpit: The instrument panel was upgraded by introducing multi-function displays (MFDs), which dramatically improved pilot and weapon systems operator (RIO) situational awareness.
-
Multirole ("Bombcat"): In the late 1990s and early 2000s, F-14Ds gained the ability to carry guided munitions (e.g., JDAM and laser-guided bombs) using the LANTIRN navigation and targeting container. This transformed the Tomcat from a pure fighter into a full multirole strike aircraft.
The F-14D flew its last combat missions over Iraq and Afghanistan and was officially retired from the US Navy in 2006.
Detailed view of the AMK 88011 kit
The 1:48 scale F-14D Super Tomcat kit from AvantGarde Model Kits (AMK) is one of the most advanced and desirable replicas of this aircraft. AMK is known for its precision craftsmanship and many optional features that allow modelers to build the aircraft to their own specifications.
The kit is designed with attention to modularity and detail:
-
Variable wing geometry: the wings can be moved between fully extended and fully retracted after assembly.
-
Includesdetailed replicas of the F110-GE-400 engines and selectable nozzle positions (open/closed).
-
Optional Positions: Can be rendered with open/closed cockpit overlay and optional position of flaps, slots, and landing gear.
-
Armament: A rich arsenal covers the strike role of the "Bombcat" and includes AIM-54 Phoenix, AIM-7 Sparrow, AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles, and underslung strike munitions (e.g., LANTIRN containers and JDAM bombs).
-
Excellent panels and details: sharp and fine engraving of surface panels and riveting.
-
Decals: Includes authentic decals and stencils for famous F-14D era aircraft such as the VF-31 "Tomcatters" and VF-213 "Black Lions".
