1/48 Aero L-29 Delfin - AMK
The iconic Czechoslovakian L-29 Delfin jet trainer (NATO code: Maya), which became the standard jet trainer of the Warsaw Pact countries. The 1:48 scale model by AvantGarde Model Kits (AMK) is the first modern injection molded model of this type in large scale.
This kit features highly detailed workmanship, especially in the area of the twin cockpit and undercarriage shafts. Included are metal etched parts for enhanced detail and an extensive sheetof decals offering attractive Cold War era schemes including Czechoslovakia, USSR, GDR and Iraq. It's a must-have for any fan of Czechoslovak aviation technology.
The Aero L-29 Delfin is a light, two-seat, jet trainer aircraft developed and manufactured in Czechoslovakia by Aero Vodochody and Let Kunovice. It was the first purely Czechoslovak jet aircraft and one of the most successful aircraft industrial programs of the Eastern Bloc outside the Soviet Union.
The XL-29 prototype first flew on 5 April 1959. After a series of comparative tests in 1961, where the Dolphin defeated the Polish PZL TS-11 Iskra and the Soviet Yak-30, it was selectedas the standard jet trainer for all Warsaw Pact member states (except Poland). This led to a huge series production; over 3,600 units were built by the time production ended in 1974. About 2,000 were delivered to the USSR.
The Dolphin was designed with an emphasis on simplicity, robustness and ease of handling, which was crucial for basic and advanced pilot training. Its rigid design, using a straight wing, allowed it to operate from unpaved, grassy or sandy runways, a necessary feature in Eastern Bloc conditions. Although primarily used as a trainer, it could carry light armament (bombs, rockets, cannon containers) and was also deployed in combat (e.g. in Egypt during the Yom Kippur War).
