Information about the original:
The Vought Corsair was one of the most unusual, yet also one of the most successful naval aircraft of World War II. It struck fear particularly into the hearts of its Japanese enemies, who nicknamed it “Whispering Death.” It fought its way across the skies over the Pacific between 1943 and 1945, achieving record-breaking success: 2,140 enemy aircraft shot down compared to a mere 189 losses. The Corsair’s total firepower consisted of six 12.7 mm Browning machine guns. Its distinctive swept-back wings became an unmistakable identifying feature for ground troops, leading them to call it the “Sweetheart of Okinawa” (Okinawa’s Darling). The F4U-1A was the first production series featuring a number of modifications. Maximum speed: 671 km/h (416 mph).
