At the start of World War II, Great Britain did not have nearly all the technical equipment needed for such a conflict, so many vehicles were produced in a hurry to fulfill urgent orders. Motorcycles, used primarily by the famous DR “Dispatch Riders” to maintain communication between units, were converted from civilian models with only minor modifications, such as a new coat of military paint and the addition of frames for canvas bags. Triumph quickly designed the 3HW model, based on the civilian “Tiger 80,” with an OHV engine and a parallel-twin front fork. This model saw service on all fronts where British armed forces fought—in Africa, Europe, and Asia. After World War II, these motorcycles were supplied to many other countries, such as Italy and Greece, where Triumphs continued to serve for a long time afterward thanks to their reliability and sturdy construction.
