Bf 109K-4 1/72

The Messerschmitt Bf 109K-4 was the pinnacle of the mass-produced variants of the legendary German fighter aeroplane, which served with the Luftwaffe throughout the Second World War. The ‘K’ (Kurfürst) series was developed in an effort to standardise and simplify the production of the fragmented later variants, whilst also maximising performance from the tried-and-tested design during the final phase of the conflict. The K-4 version entered combat from autumn 1944 and was deployed primarily to defend the Reich’s airspace at a time when the Luftwaffe was already facing the overwhelming numerical superiority of the Allied air forces. For modellers, the Bf 109K-4 is attractive as a symbol of the technical development of a single type pushed to the limits of its capabilities — a sleek, powerful and easily recognisable aircraft with a rich history and a range of interesting camouflage schemes.

The Eduard 70166 kit in 1/72 scale is a glue-together model released in the ProfiPACK series, which is highly regarded by modellers for its above-standard contents. Both the plastic parts and the decals come directly from Eduard. The pack includes pre-painted photo-etched parts, which allow for detailed rendering, particularly of the interior and other small elements, as well as a masking sheet for easier and cleaner painting of the glazing and other surfaces. The kit does not contain any resin parts. Thanks to six camouflage schemes, the model-maker can choose from several historical variants and thus customise the finished model to their liking.

The 1/72 scale is practical for building fighter aircraft in compact spaces and allows the model to be easily displayed in a showcase or incorporated into a larger collection of fighters. For the late-production Bf 109K-4, it is customary to emphasise the panel lines and apply weathering effects reflecting its intensive use towards the end of the war. The pack does not contain the paints or adhesives required for assembly.
