Information about the original:
Armored Recovery Vehicles (ARVs) first appeared during World War II. They were built on the chassis of existing armored vehicles; the main armament and turrets were simply removed and replaced with specialized equipment for recovering and repairing armored combat vehicles damaged in battle. The American M-32 ARV was built on the chassis of the well-known Sherman A-4 medium tank, and the U.S. Army used it during World War II on European battlefields. A characteristic feature was its superstructure, which allowed it to lift and tow damaged tanks. In addition, it carried a load of repair tools and spare parts on board, which only reinforced its role as a true “mobile armored workshop” capable of operating even on the front lines. The M-32 was thus able to perform even complex operations such as replacing a tank engine. After the end of World War II, the Americans also used it in the Korean War, and it served in many other countries until the 1990s.
