The Leopard 1 tank, which entered service in the mid-1960s, formed the backbone of the armored forces of the Federal Republic of Germany and several NATO countries during the Cold War. Its combat role was extremely important, as it served as the primary deterrent against the vast number of tanks that the Warsaw Pact armies could deploy. It was armed with a reliable 105mm L7 cannon capable of firing various types of ammunition. The A5 version represented a significant improvement thanks to the installation of a modified turret capable of accommodating new computer systems for target identification and fire control. Composite polycarbonate armor plates were also added, which significantly increased protection and resistance against enemy “hits.”
