In 1940, following the outbreak of World War II, the U.S. Army General Staff ordered various manufacturers to design a lightweight, all-wheel-drive multipurpose vehicle. The American companies Bantam, Willys Overland, and Ford Motor Co. competed against one another. The Willys prototype was selected; it went into mass production in early 1941 and reached a total production run of 640,000 units. Of these, Ford produced 277,000 units under a licensing agreement. This shows that the Jeep was the most widely used light vehicle in the war industry during World War II.
