This large twin-engine aircraft was built for the U.S. Air Force as a ground-attack and anti-tank aircraft. Despite its heavy armor and armament, the A-10 is highly maneuverable, which is particularly important for overcoming enemy anti-aircraft fire. The Thunderbolt (also nicknamed the “Warthog”) was essentially built entirely around its impressive 30 mm GAU-8 cannon, which can easily penetrate even a tank’s heavy armor, thanks in part to special high-penetration rounds. This aircraft saw extensive use, for example, during the Gulf War, when it successfully destroyed several hundred Iraqi vehicles with only minimal losses, despite heavy enemy defenses consisting of both conventional and missile firepower. Around the midpoint of the first decade of the 21st century, the A-10 was upgraded to the “C” standard to meet new and more demanding operational requirements. The A-10C is, in fact, the most modern version of this robust and reliable attack aircraft, capable of employing even the most advanced weapon and target-acquisition systems.
