Information about the original and the model:
In the early stages of World War II, the American Curtiss P-40B proved to be one of the most important fighter aircraft available to the Allied air forces. Equipped with Allison V-1710-33 engines, they were flown by RAF pilots in North Africa and by American volunteer groups in China, and gradually became some of the most iconic fighter aircraft of the entire war, in part thanks to the menacing shark mouths painted on their noses. Probably the most distinctive versions of the P-40 were the early models, which were characterized by an exceptionally menacing profile with a shorter, more pointed nose and the extremely raspy sound of the Allison V-1710 engine. The P-40B aircraft (designated Tomahawk IIa by the RAF) thus looked almost like flying great white sharks. When the RAF’s 112th Desert Squadron added aggressive-looking shark teeth and eyes to its aircraft in 1941, they unwittingly turned their Tomahawks into some of the most iconic aircraft of World War II—and certainly some of the most beautiful. This design found its way onto many other aircraft during the subsequent years of the war, but the RAF’s desert air units were undoubtedly at the forefront of this trend.
