Description

The De Havilland Mosquito was a British, twin-engine, multi-role aircraft of mixed, mainly wooden construction, with a classical tailplane. The prototype was flown on 25 November 1940, and the first machines entered line units in July 1941. The machine was in no small part made of wooden elements, glued with casein glues, and later with synthetic ones. Thanks to this, the machine was very light and had excellent aerodynamic characteristics. Interestingly, it also proved to be quite resistant to anti-aircraft fire. For this reason, the Mosquito quickly earned the nickname of a wooden wonder. Two Rolls-Royce Merlin engines of various variants with outputs ranging from 1460 hp to 1680 hp were used as propulsion. In the course of the war, several versions of this very successful aircraft were built. The most important of them are min. Mosquito PR.IX (reconnaissance version), B.IV series I and II (bombing version), F.II (fighter version), NF.II (night fighter with radar AI.IV), one of the most widely produced - FB.VI (fighter-bomber version). Mosquito aircraft performed numerous functions in the RAF, but the most famous were the fighter-bomber and bomber versions, which carried out raids on German public buildings (e.g. police or Gestapo headquarters) in occupied Europe, often with surgical precision. Technical data (Mosquito F. Mk.II): length: 13.57m, wingspan: 16.52m, height: 5.3m, top speed: 610km/h, climb speed: 8,8m/s, maximum range: 1500km, maximum ceiling 8800m, armament: fixed - 4 machine guns cal.7,7mm and 4 cannons Hispano Mk II cal.20mm.
