1/72 SAAB SK-37E Stör-Viggen ‘Electronic Warfare Aggressor’

The SAAB 37 Viggen was an aircraft whose design was ahead of its time. Swedish designers opted for an unconventional design featuring a double delta wing and forward-mounted horizontal stabilisers (canards), which enabled the aircraft to meet the specified requirements and even exceed them in certain respects. The Viggen’s basic design formed a versatile platform which, with the aid of specialised equipment, could be adapted for various roles – from a strike aircraft through to reconnaissance and a two-seater trainer version.

The two-seater trainer version, the SK 37, was developed as a training variant of the Viggen, featuring a modified rear cockpit and a distinctive taller vertical stabiliser. Some of these aircraft were later converted to the SK 37E Stör-Viggen variant, specialising in electronic warfare (jamming). Among other things, these aircraft were used for training and simulating hostile environments, and they became the last Viggen aircraft in service with the Swedish Air Force, remaining in service until 2007. For modellers, the SK 37E represents a less common, but all the more interesting, chapter in the history of the Viggen.

This 1:72 scale model from Special Hobby is based on an older mould from the brand and is supplemented by a new set of decals. The decals provide markings for three aircraft – two in US livery and one bearing British markings – making this kit an unconventional take on the Swedish aircraft in ‘aggressor’ livery. The 1:72 scale is practical for display models and for collectors who wish to unify their collection with a single paint scheme. The pack does not contain the paints or adhesives required for assembly.
