The BMR-1 was a Soviet engineer tank designed for mine clearance and crossing mined territory, built on the chassis of the proven T-55 tank. The KMT-7 mine clearance version, introduced in the 1980s, used rotating arms with heavy discs or hammers to destroy mines. The vehicle was developed to support armoured units in high threat minefield conditions and was often deployed in high intensity combat zones.
The Late Mod. version included upgrades to armour, electronics and equipment, and vehicles of this type continued to serve in the armies of post-Soviet states after the collapse of the USSR.
