1/35 Sherman M4A1 76W
The M4A1 (76)W Sherman kit by Border Model in 1:35 scale is a detailed replica of one of the most important Allied medium tanks of World War II. The M4A1 variant was distinguished from other versions by its characteristic die-cast hull. The "(76)W" designation symbolizes the more powerful 76mm gun and improved wet ammunition storage, which greatly increased crew safety. The kit is rich in detail, including the metal barrel, photo-etched parts and 3D printed elements.
The M4 Sherman medium tank was the backbone of the U.S. armored forces and the main tank of the Allies in Western Europe during World War II. The tank was developed as a successor to the M3 Lee, with the aim of providing a vehicle with a fully rotating turret and main armament. Although the original Sherman, equipped with a 75mm gun, was effective against most German tanks in the early stages of the war, its firepower proved insufficient with the advent of heavier and better-armored vehicles such as the Panther and Tiger.
In response to this threat, the new M1 76mm high-velocity gun was developed. This gun provided the Sherman with significantly better armor penetration and enabled it to effectively engage enemy tanks at longer ranges. The “W” in the designation M4A1 (76)W stands for “wet stowage,” referring to the new design of the ammunition racks, which were surrounded by water and ethylene glycol. This solution significantly reduced the risk of a catastrophic ammunition explosion following a hit on the tank, which had been one of the greatest shortcomings of the original versions. The M4A1 variant was characterized by its cast, rounded hull, which is easily distinguishable from versions with a welded hull. M4A1 (76)W tanks began appearing on battlefields across Europe in the summer of 1944.
