1/35 Junkers Ju 87G Stuka - Border Model

The Junkers Ju 87 Stuka, although obsolete in the second half of the war for operations over areas with well-organised air defences, found a new application on the Eastern Front. With the massive tank battles, specialized aircraft had to be developed to fight armored vehicles. The Ju 87 G-1 and G-2 variants were a direct response to this need. These aircraft, nicknamed "Kanonenvogel" (literally "gun bird"), were a modification of the older Ju 87 D variants. The main and most significant change was the removal of the dive brakes and the installation of a pair of 37mm Flak 18 BK 3.7 cannons under the wings, each with 12 rounds in cartridges. These guns, originally anti-aircraft guns, could penetrate the upper armour of most Soviet tanks such as the T-34 and KV-1 with their tungsten projectiles.

The G-1 version was a conversion of the older D-5, while the G-2 was based on the D-3 airframe and had slightly wider wings for better flight characteristics with heavy armament. Despite its low speed and vulnerability, the Ju 87 G became an extremely effective weapon in the hands of experienced pilots such as Hans-Ulrich Rudel. Rudel, who is considered the most successful Ju 87 pilot, destroyed hundreds of tanks and other vehicles in his G-2.
