Information about the original:
The keel of the Titanic was laid on March 31, 1909, roughly fifteen weeks after that of its sister ship, the Olympic. Both steamships were built simultaneously and were equipped with the highest level of elegance and luxury of their time. The White Star Line intended to use them for its prestigious transatlantic voyages. Two years later, on May 31, 1911, the completed Olympic was handed over to its new owners at the Harland & Wolff shipyard in Northern Ireland; the Titanic was launched on the same day, about fifteen minutes past noon. With a length of 269.04 m, a beam of 28.19 m, and a tonnage of 46,329 BRT, it was larger than any ship built to that time and was recognized as the largest ship in the world until 1912. Captain Edward John Smith originally took command of the Olympic, but later transferred to the Titanic for its maiden voyage, which began on Wednesday, April 10, 1912, when the ship set sail from Southampton. As if fate were already foreshadowing disaster, they narrowly missed the New York, which was anchored there, as they were leaving the harbor. Before heading out to the open sea toward New York (USA), the Titanic made scheduled stops in Cherbourg (France) and then in Queenstown (Ireland). The voyage continued without incident until Sunday, April 14, when, at approximately 11:40 p.m. (ship’s time), the watch bell rang the alarm due to an approaching iceberg. However, the ship’s starboard side grazed the iceberg, and two hours and forty minutes after the collision, it sank into the icy waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Only 712 passengers survived the disaster, and Captain Smith went down with his ship.
