Information about the original:
The "Bismarck," with a displacement of 42,343 metric tons, was the largest and most modern battleship in the world at the time (along with the British "Hood"). She was launched on February 14, 1940, at the Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg, and, along with her sister ship, the "Tirpitz," she was the most advanced and prestigious ship in the German Navy. It measured a full 251 m in length, and the top of its main mast rose 52 m above sea level. Its armor consisted of a total of 17,450 metric tons of armor plates. Its newly designed heavy guns fired 800-kg shells up to a range of 34.2 km and could penetrate even 350-mm armor from a distance of 21 km.
On May 24, 1941, the “Bismarck," together with the heavy cruiser "Prinz Eugen," succeeded in sinking the largest British battlecruiser, the "Hood," with a direct hit from the fifth salvo of their 380-mm guns during a naval battle at the edge of the ice floes near Greenland. Although the “Prinz Eugen” did not take any direct hits, the “Bismarck,” which had sustained damage to its bow, was supposed to take refuge in a French port. However, during the subsequent pursuit by British ships and aircraft, on May 27, 1941, one of the torpedoes struck the rudder, and after a series of further hits from the ships of the Home Fleet—which held a clear numerical advantage—the "Bismarck" was crippled and ultimately sunk in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, 800 km off the French coast. Of the 2,092 crew members, only 115 survived.
