During World War II, the Boeing B-17 was the most famous heavily armored strategic bomber, and although a total of 12,677 were built, it was only by a wide margin the most numerous aircraft of its type. It bore the name “Flying Fortress,” which was given to it by an American journalist at the time of its maiden flight. The Boeing B-17F was the first mass-produced Flying Fortress. The most famous aircraft in this series was the B-17F-10-BO, manufactured by Boeing, which was delivered on July 15, 1942, and entered service with the 324th Bombardment Squadron, 91st Bombardment Group, at Bassingbourn, England. The crew nicknamed it the “Memphis Belle” after the girlfriend of pilot Lt. Robert K. Morgan. Its fame stemmed from the fact that it was officially the first U.S. Army Air Forces bomber in Europe to complete 25 missions and became the star of a Hollywood propaganda film. After this mission, the Memphis Belle and its crew were recalled to the United States.It was later purchased by the city of Memphis and designated as an outdoor memorial. In 2004, the B-17F underwent a complete renovation. Today, the Memphis Belle is once again open to the public.
