Manfred von Richthofen, the “Red Baron,” and his red Fokker triplane made history during World War I. It was introduced to the Western Front in June 1917 after the General Staff approved the Fokker Dr. I following extensive testing, and this was followed by its endorsement by flying ace Manfred von Richthofen.The Dr. I was the most agile of all aircraft and reached high speeds. The Oberursel radial engine (110 koní) gave the Dr. I a top speed of 193 km/h and allowed it to climb to 3,000 m in six minutes. Two Snandau machine guns were mounted in the front of the cockpit. All pilots in Richthofen’s squadron flew red triplanes. Although the Dr. I was designed for the Western Front at the end of 1917, the Red Baron continued to fly this model, shooting down a total of 80 enemy aircraft before he himself was shot down in April 1918.
