Toward the end of World War II, brothers Reimar and Walter Horten were the two most famous designers of so-called flying wings in all of Germany. They brought their expertise in this field to a special unit known as Sonderkommando 9, which was responsible for developing these unique tailless all-wing aircraft. Development of the aircraft known as the Horten Ho IX, equipped with two BMW 003A-1 jet engines, began in 1942. While the first prototypes could only be built as gliders due to difficulties with the jet engines, the second prototype was fitted with a Jumo 004B-1 engine. The V2 made its maiden flight in 1944 and managed to reach a speed of over 780 km/h. Production of the Horten aircraft was later moved to Gothaer Waggonfabrik, and the aircraft’s designation was changed to Go 229. The first aircraft to roll off the Gothaer Waggonfabrik production line, the Go 229 A-O V3, was equipped with a Jumo 004-C engine.
