🌊 Historical Context of the Color

During the war, the colors of IJN ships varied depending on the shipyard where they were painted, due to differences in suppliers and manufacturing processes. The “Kure Arsenal Color” shade is a dark gray that was typical of ships painted at the Kure Naval Arsenal, located in Hiroshima Prefecture. This shade is often darker and cooler than the colors used in Sasebo or Yokosuka.

• This specific dark gray shade was used on the hulls of most heavy cruisers, battleships (e.g., the Yamato and Musashi during their initial deployment), aircraft carriers, and destroyers that underwent maintenance or construction in Kure.
