The Italeri M3A1 Scout Car 1:72 plastic kit depicts the light armored vehicle that White Motor Company began developing in 1938 for the U.S. Army. The M3 type was intended for patrol, reconnaissance, and command duties. It used four-wheel drive and a 110 hp Hercules JXD six-cylinder gasoline engine, giving it a top speed of 81 km/h. The vehicle could carry up to 8 men and was armed with a 12.7 mm Browning M2 machine gun plus two Browning machine guns on the sides.
Its first combat use came in the Philippines in 1941. It later served in North Africa and Sicily, before the more modern M8 Greyhound gradually took over the more demanding reconnaissance role. Beyond U.S. service, the type was also used by British and French forces and by some Red Army units, which towed 76 mm ZIS-3 guns on the Eastern Front.
