This large, three-axle amphibious vehicle was developed during World War II for the U.S. Armed Forces. The goal was to design a vehicle that would supply ammunition, food, and materials stored in the cargo holds of transport ships to the invasion forces that were occupying bridgeheads in enemy territory immediately after landing. The DUKW had good maneuverability and could navigate well even in rough terrain, which, combined with its high load capacity, allowed it to fully fulfill its logistical role. In the postwar years, it was widely used by U.S. allies until the 1970s, including for civil defense missions.
