The American third-generation M1 Abrams main battle tank is the backbone of the United States Army and Marine Corps armored divisions. It features heavy armor (it is one of the heaviest combat vehicles in the world) as well as a powerful multi-fuel turbine engine. It first entered service in the early 1980s to replace the aging M-60. Its modern armored hull houses a sophisticated computerized fire control and command system. The Abrams provides its crew with greater protection than many of its predecessors, primarily thanks to a separate and heavily protected ammunition storage compartment inside the tank’s main hull. It was originally armed with a 105 mm main gun, which is to be replaced as part of a modernization program with a more powerful 120 mm smoothbore gun. The Abrams has been deployed extensively and with considerable success in several military conflicts, including recent combat operations in the Middle East and Afghanistan.
