The Leopard 2 was developed in the 1970s to meet a very specific need of the West German Army, which was seeking a new, modern, and effective main battle tank capable of replacing the Leopard 1. It is armed with a 120mm cannon, and thanks to its twin-turbo V-12 diesel engine, it can reach a top speed of up to 68 km/h. It entered service in 1979, but thanks to continuous improvements in technology, armament, and armor, it is still considered one of the best main battle tanks in the world today. Specifically, the Leopard 2 A6 version represents a clear improvement over the earliest versions. It is armed with a 120mm Rheinmetall L/55 smoothbore gun and is protected by armor made of modern third-generation composite materials. The shape of the turret and the profile of the mantlet are designed to minimize the impact of enemy rounds and anti-tank weapons.
