The German Sd.Kfz. 138 Marder III tank destroyer was developed for the German Army based on the chassis of the obsolete but readily available Czechoslovakian Panzer 38 (t) light tank. The modification involved mounting a powerful 75 mm PaK 40 anti-tank gun into the open-top hull, which was protected by a sloped armor plate. The Marder III Ausf. H had its engine located in the rear of the vehicle and its weapon system in the center to ensure greater protection for the crew. In this configuration, the Wehrmacht had at its disposal a tank destroyer that was easy to manufacture and whose firepower was capable of standing up to the main battle tanks of the era. It entered production in 1942 to participate in combat on the Eastern Front, but ultimately saw action on all fronts until the end of the war.
