Information about the original:
Introduced in 1982, it marked a turning point in the production of the prestigious Stuttgart-based automaker. The “190” was, in fact, the entry-level model in the Mercedes product line, yet it featured important stylistic and technical innovations. Its design, featuring an excellent blend of style and elegance, would later influence even higher-end models in Mercedes’ future lineup. From a technical standpoint, the car featured a front-mounted longitudinal engine, rear-wheel drive, and disc brakes on all four wheels. It featured MacPherson strut front suspension and a “multilink” rear suspension. The first production versions were equipped with two 1,998 cm³ gasoline engines—one with a carburetor and the other, in the 190E version, with fuel injection. Shortly thereafter, the 2.3 16V sports version was introduced, which was also used in one-make racing series, such as the 1984 “Nürburgring Champions Race Cup,” which featured famous drivers of the era and some Formula 1 “old-timers.”
