Information about the original:
The Northrop F-5 was developed in the 1960s in response to requests from several NATO countries that needed a simple, inexpensive, and easy-to-maintain multi-role fighter aircraft. Its airframe later served as inspiration for the development of the F-5E Tiger II in the early 1970s. The Tiger II was equipped with two new J85-GE-21 jet engines offering significantly higher power and thrust than the previous version, and featured a longer and wider fuselage. Improved flight characteristics resulting from the new aerodynamic configuration, a longer operational range, and modernized avionics enabled the Tiger II to be successfully used by many air forces. Its primary armament consisted of two 20-mm cannons mounted in the nose beneath the cockpit, which could be supplemented by a wide arsenal of air-to-air missiles. In addition to its primary role as a fighter aircraft, however, the Tiger also retained extensive capabilities for attacking ground targets.
