Information about the original:
The JU-87 dive bomber is certainly one of the most famous aircraft of World War II. This distinctive aircraft with its “seagull wing” gained considerable (infamous) notoriety at the start of the war and, along with the Wehrmacht’s armored divisions, is considered one of the defining symbols of the Blitzkrieg. New versions with different operational profiles were developed during the war. Specifically, the Ju-87G was developed as an “anti-tank” version of the Stuka, designed to counter the large formations of enemy armored vehicles engaged in combat on the Eastern Front after 1943. Hans Ulrich Rudel, a Stuka “ace,” proposed adding a pair of 37mm Flak 18 cannons, which were installed in underwing nacelles to better counter this growing threat. In this configuration, the Ju-87G “Kanonenvogel,” in the hands of experienced pilots, proved to be an exceptionally effective weapon. Even more refined was the G-2 version, which featured larger wing surfaces, derived in turn from the earlier D-5 version.
