THE FALKLAND WAR
The Harrier is probably the most famous aircraft with vertical/short takeoff and landing capabilities in military history. It was designed and developed by the British engineering firm Hawker Siddeley in the 1960s. This aircraft played an active role in military operations during the Falklands War in 1982. Specifically, the Harrier Gr. 3 version was equipped with several new features, such as laser targeting and integrated electronic systems, which made it highly effective in Royal Air Force missions providing close air support and attacking ground targets. It was armed with two 30mm cannons mounted on the underside of the fuselage and could also carry a substantial payload of offensive weapons, such as missiles, conventional bombs, and laser-guided bombs. In addition, two drop-tanks could be used to extend the aircraft’s operational range.
