The Panzerkampfwagen V Panther (Sd.Kfz.171) was a German tank produced from 1942 to 1945. The Panther embodied Germany’s response to the Russian T-34/76 tank. It surpassed the T-34 in both armor thickness and, in particular, the firepower and accuracy of its 7.5 cm KwK 42 L/70 gun, which was designed to destroy a T-34 at a range of 3,000 meters. The Panther is often referred to as the best medium tank of World War II. However, this is a somewhat controversial claim, as its weight is more typical of a heavy tank, comparable to that of the Soviet IS-2 or the American M26 Pershing.
The Panther excelled in mobility and had a top speed of 55 km/h. The tank featured sloped armor, which reached a thickness of up to 80 mm in some places. The Panther was first deployed in the Battle of Kursk, but this occurred without prior testing, which is likely why its performance at the time was somewhat disappointing.
