The German medium tank Panzerkampfwagen IV was developed in the late 1930s and saw extensive use during World War II. Production of the Panzer IV Ausf. H variant began in June 1943, and it was officially designated Sd. Kfz. 161/2. Unlike previous variants, this new model featured Zimmerit coating on all vertical armor surfaces to prevent magnetic anti-tank mines from adhering. The upper part of the turret was also reinforced, with armor thickness increased from 10 to 16 mm and 25 mm in certain sections. As additional protection, 5-mm armor plates were added to the sides of the hull and 8-mm plates to the turret; however, this meant sacrificing the side vision ports. Later, the hull was further fitted with triangular struts for the protective plates, which were otherwise easily destroyed. Together with other modifications, these additions increased the weight to 25 metric tons and reduced the maximum off-road speed to just 16 km/h.
