The Armstrong Whitworth Whitley was one of three medium twin-engine bombers in service with the RAF at the outbreak of World War II. Despite its low speed, limited practical ceiling, and small armament capacity, the Whitley was an important aircraft for the RAF at that time and formed the backbone of the early night bomber units. Later in the war, it was used by the Coastal Command and also as a glider tow plane.
