As the battle intensified, Luftwaffe Bf 109 fighter pilots, following the evacuation from Dunkirk, launched operations against Britain and found themselves at a disadvantage for the first time. With only enough fuel to stay over England for a limited time, any mechanical problem or damage sustained during combat would, at best, result in their capture and certainly helped hasten the end of their war.
