The aircraft carrier HMS Victorious joined the Home Fleet immediately after its launch in May 1941, and just nine days later, its pilots encountered the German battleship Bismarck and attacked it. Although the aircrews on the Victorious were inexperienced, on May 26, 1941, they managed to hit the Bismarck with a torpedo in the center of its hull, piercing a fuel tank.
After the sinking of the Bismarck, HMS Victorious continued to serve with the Home Fleet, and its Fairey Albacore aircraft participated in an attack on another German battleship, the Tirpitz, in May 1942. Later, she provided cover for the Russian convoys PQ-15 and PQ-17 in May and June 1942. She then took part in Operation Pedestal and the landings in North Africa in late 1942, before sailing to Pearl Harbor to join the battle group of the USS Saratoga. It arrived on May 17, 1943, and took part in operations under Task Force 14 in the southwestern Pacific. American aircraft and their crews embarked on her, and together with the Saratoga, they headed for the Solomon Islands.
Throughout that year, this hard-working ship supported the U.S. Pacific Fleet in numerous operations, during which it typically carried both British and American Wildcat fighters on board. From January to March 1944, the Victorious again provided escort for Russian convoys, and on April 3, 1944, she took part in an air strike as part of Operation “Tungsten” against the German battleship Tirpitz. After further modernization, she joined the British Eastern Fleet bound for the Far East. In July 1944, she led an attack on Palembang alongside HMS Illustrious, and on July 25, she joined HMS Indomitable in an attack on the Andaman Islands. In October 1944, she was assigned to the British Pacific Fleet, with which she took part in some of the final fierce battles toward the end of the war.
